29th Annual Polar Bear Dip Plunge in Cayucos California

You can call them brave, or maybe even a bit crazy. But, they'll be back at the same place, on January 1st of each year.

Hundreds of people are expected to head to Cayucos Friday for the 29th annual Polar Bear Dip. Each year, people brave the cold waters and plunge into the ocean. Some even dress up in costume for the occasion. But organizers say, no wetsuits! That's considered "cheating."

The event first began as a way to honor the memory of Cayucos resident Carline Soule.

Festivities begin Friday at 10:00a.m. and the big plunge usually happens at about noon.
